How to Obtain AHIMA CEUsThere are several ways to obtain AHIMA CEUs and some may not be listed here.The following are the most common methods:
AuthorshipObtain AHIMA CEUs by creating and publishing or presenting HIIM related educational material in a written or electronic method that is available to the general public (outside of job duties).For individuals presenting their work to an audience 1 AHIMA CEU is awarded for every 15 minutes of speaker time spent at the podium. If the individual is a panel participant in the educational program being presented then 1 CEU is awarded for each 60 minutes spent at the podium. AHIMA CEUs are awarded according to the following list for publications:
Educational ProgramsAHIMA will awards 1 CEU for each 60 minutes spent participating in:
Formal and Post Secondary EducationObtain AHIMA CEUs when pursuing formal or post secondary education. (Courses must be completed prior to the December 31 ending date of the reporting cycle).For formal courses taken in pursuit of a degree with HIIM relevant courses 15 AHIMA CEUs will be awarded for each semester or trimester completed, or 10 AHIMA CEUs are awarded for each completed quarter. You can also obtain AHIMA CEUs for an audit of an academic course or a relevant non-credit continuing education course. In this instance the individual would be expected to attend the class but not complete all of the requirements which would grant them full credit. In order to earn the CEUs the course must be completed prior to the December 31st end cycle reporting date. AHIMA awards 6 CEUs for each semester or trimester and 4 CEUs for each quarter. Individuals can also obtain AHIMA CEUs through other types of education, such as online, independent, or distance education. These are reviewed and assigned CEUs on an individual basis by CCHIIM. Prior to starting courses classes must be pre-approved for CEUs by AHIMA or be accredited through the National Home Study Council. Courses being taken should consists of a pre-determine syllabus or curriculum, and require readings, exercises, and correspondence with a knowledgeable instructor. The course being taken must also be completed by the end cycle reporting date of December 31st.
Independent Studies1 CEU is awarded by AHIMA for every 60 minutes spent in a HIIM relevant study group; 1 CEU per year is awarded by AHIMA for advanced research done to support AHIMA or AHIMA affiliates activities associated with task forces, work groups, and expert panels of HIIM related topics;*Other independent studies must be pre-approved by AHIMA in order to obtain AHIMA CEUs or CEUs must already pre-determined on an individual basis by CCHIM*
Volunteering, Participating, and InvolvementObtain AHIMA CEUs for participating as a Community of Practice facilitator.5 CEUs are awarded for 1 year of service, in each community, for each year in the reporting cycle. AHIMA will also award 1 CEU for visiting an exhibit at a state or national meeting. AHIMA CEUs can also be awarded to individuals who have direct oversight and involvement of directed clinical practice on behalf of CAHIIM. In this case each individual is awarded 5 CEUs for each student that they are supervising with a maximum of 10 supervising CEUs allowed in a two year reporting cycle. Being involved in an AHIMA volunteer leader conference or work group is another way to obtain AHIMA CEUs. (In this scenario CEUs must be pre-approved.)

CEU ContentIn order to maintain a certification individuals must obtain AHIMA CEUs and report them every two years. CEUs earned each reporting cycle must comply with the minimum requirements regarding HIIM relevant topics. ~ 80% of CEUs must be earned within the HIIM domain ~20% of CEUs can include activities on topics not relevant to HIIM

An annual "self-assessment" is mandatory for the CCS, CCA, and CCS-P credentials. Each assessment is awarded 5 AHIMA CEUs. Aside from being mandatory this is a relatively inexpensive way to obtain AHIMA CEUs. |

According to AHIMA continuing education units are based on educational contact hours.
Therefore, each sixty minutes of attendance at an educational program is awarded 1 CEU.
