Certified Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Coder (CCVTC)The Certified Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Coder credential (CCVTC) is offered through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).This credential is different than the Certified Interventional Radiology Cardiovascular Coder (CIRCC) credential and the Certified Cardiology Coder (CCC). The CCVTC focuses on an individual's ability to read and understand operative notes as well as office notes, abstract pertinent information, and select the proper ICD-9-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for procedures and diagnosis. The CCVTC examination is a 150 question, five hour and forty minute exam. Examinees are expected to have a general knowledge of common medical terminology and anatomy and physiology, both 1995 and 1997 E/M guidelines, and Medicare rules and regulations regarding teaching situations, incident to, consultations, shared visits, and global surgeries. Examinees are also expected to be able to code surgical procedures that are commonly performed not only by a cardiologist (Ex. heart catherization, pacemaker placement, etc.), but also thoracic surgeons (Ex. cardiopulmonary bypass and lung tumor ablation). Individuals who wish to obtain the CCVTC are encouraged to have prior education and experience, but it is not required. It is also suggested that examinees purchase and complete the AAPC's CCVTC study guide and practice exam. Although the CCVTC credential is not one of the top two coding credentials sought after it is a great compliment to existing credentials. Individuals holding dual credentials (Ex. CPC and CCVTC) have marked themselves as experts in two areas and gain a competitive edge over individuals holding single credentials.
